Is Sciatica Interfering With Everyday Life?
Back and leg pain can make ordinary activities much more difficult.
Sitting through a meal, driving, working, sleeping, walking through a store, or simply getting comfortable may become frustrating when pain keeps traveling into the buttock or leg.
For some people, symptoms are occasional. For others, they can interfere with the activities they enjoy and make it difficult to stay active.
If pain, numbness, tingling, or weakness keeps returning, the important question is what may be causing it.
Do You Have Any of These Symptoms?
Sciatica symptoms can vary depending on which nerves are affected and what may be irritating them.
Sharp or shooting pain in the buttock or leg
Lower back pain
Pain that travels from the buttock into the thigh
Pain extending down the leg or into the foot
Numbness or tingling in the leg or foot
Burning or electric-like pain
Weakness in the leg in some cases
Symptoms that become worse with sitting, walking, or certain movements
*Low back pain may or may not be present.
What Causes the Pain, Tingling, Numbness, or Weakness?
Sciatica describes symptoms associated with irritation or compression affecting nerves that originate in the lower back and travel into the leg.
Because these nerves extend through the buttock, thigh, lower leg, and foot, symptoms may be felt far from the area where the irritation begins.
Pain in the Buttock or Thigh
Sciatic nerve irritation can cause pain that is felt through the buttock and into the back or side of the thigh.
Pain Into the Lower Leg or Foot
Because the sciatic nerve extends down the leg, symptoms can continue into the calf, ankle, or foot.
Numbness or Tingling
Irritation affecting the nerve can cause altered sensation, including numbness, tingling, or a pins-and-needles feeling.
Weakness
When the nerve is affected, some people may notice weakness in the leg, ankle, or foot.

What May Be Causing Your Sciatica?
There is not one single cause of sciatica.
Bulging or Herniated Discs
A spinal disc may bulge or herniate and irritate nearby nerve structures.
Spinal Stenosis
Narrowing around the nerves may contribute to pain, numbness, tingling, or weakness.
Degenerative Disc or Joint Changes
Changes in the lower spine may alter the space around the nerves and affect their function.
Inflammation or Nerve Irritation
Inflammation surrounding a nerve may increase sensitivity and contribute to radiating symptoms.
The goal is not simply to identify where it hurts — it is to determine what may be contributing to the symptoms so treatment decisions can be guided accordingly.
A Non-Surgical Approach to Sciatica
Spinal Decompression Therapy
Non-surgical spinal decompression therapy uses controlled cycles of tension and release to gently stretch and relax the lower spine. The changing tension creates a pumping motion that can help increase space between the vertebrae and reduce pressure around the discs and nearby nerve structures.
Unlike traditional traction, which uses a more constant pull, spinal decompression varies the tension throughout the session. These repeated changes in tension allow the spine to move through cycles of decompression and relaxation rather than remaining under one continuous pulling force.
Computer-Controlled Treatment
Treatment settings are precisely programmed for each session.
Designed to Reduce Pressure
Spinal decompression is intended to reduce pressure affecting spinal discs and nerve structures.
Individualized Treatment
Treatment recommendations and parameters are individually selected based on each patient’s condition and clinical findings.
What Does Spinal Decompression Feel Like?
During spinal decompression, the patient lies comfortably on a specialized treatment table. Once positioned, the computerized system controls the decompression applied to the targeted area of the lower spine.
Treatment settings are adjusted based on the individual patient, the area being treated, and the treatment goals. The session is generally comfortable and relaxing, and some patients even fall asleep during treatment.
Is Spinal Decompression Right for Everyone?
Not every person with leg pain has the same underlying problem, and not every case of sciatica is treated the same way. Before recommending care, Dr. Roth considers the patient’s symptoms, health history, and findings from the examination and any necessary X-Rays/MRIs.
If spinal decompression fits the patient’s condition and findings, it may be included as part of the treatment plan. If another approach makes more sense, those options can be discussed as well.
