The Patient Health History

During your first visit, the doctor will review your health history, focusing on the specific areas of concern. You will be asked about the problems you have been experiencing and the nature of your symptoms.  Patient Health History is an essential tool used by the doctor to determine an accurate diagnosis.  In fact, approximately 80% of where the diagnosis comes from is rooted in Patient Health History.

The Orthopedic / Neurological Examination

After discussing your condition, the doctor will perform an orthopedic/neurological examination.  Patients can be examined fully clothed.  The examination usually includes an assessment of the patient’s range of motion.

Range of motion is one component of the orthopedic/neurological evaluation and helps the doctor see where there are any joint restrictions, and how those joints are affected by loss of motion.  Whether it’s spinal or extremity joints, range of motion tells the doctor volumes about your pain and how to correct it.

Checking for tender areas will also help the doctor isolate specific regions that need attention.  Tender areas are a sign of soft tissue damage occurring from an inflammatory condition.  Structural misalignments in the spine will often result in tenderness or a bruised feeling.

Also, the doctor will check neurological functions by assessing your reflexes.  Most patients have seen doctors check reflexes at some point in their lives, such as the knee reflex.  There are actually a number of different deep tendon reflexes (also known as DTRs) that are important to check. These reflexes tell the doctor how your extremities are communicating neurologically with your spinal cord. An example of a common condition that may abnormally affect the reflexes is a herniated spinal disc. If the herniated disc pinches a spinal nerve root, the reflex associated with that nerve may be impacted.  Sometimes, a herniated disc may be present with no back pain at all, but cause extremity symptoms such as pain, numbness, tingling, burning, and/or weakness.

Sometimes, muscle strength will be evaluated as part of the overall examination. Weakness in muscles may be indicative of a pinched nerve, or some other underlying condition.

Report of Findings

One of our hallmarks of patient satisfaction is the time and effort spent with each new patient to provide a unique experience.  As a new patient, you will discover that Dr. Roth takes the time to ensure that your first visit is exceptional.  By really listening to your problems, providing a thorough evaluation and any necessary diagnostic testing, the doctor will be prepared to start you on the optimal path to wellness.

Before any treatment is rendered, the doctor will provide a report of his findings.  This usually will take 10 to 15 minutes where your exam and/or diagnostic tests findings are explained and discussed.  Dr. Roth will often use 3-D models and computer graphics to help patients visualize their condition and understand their treatment options.

The report of findings also provides patients the opportunity to get all of their questions answered about every aspect of their care from diagnosis, to treatment, insurance coverage, or payment plans.
